Are you an AI influencer?

Influencers. They’re everywhere. Fashion, fitness, food, gaming, pets…and now in AI.

According to a May 2024 451 Research Vanguard Report, AI infrastructure planning is a team effort, commissioned by AMD, AI Influencers are non-IT stakeholders who recognize the game-changing promise of GenAI, have valuable ideas about how it could be infused in their business units, and want to contribute to an AI investment decision. The Report concludes by encouraging organizations to involve AI Influencers in the planning process. It states, “A highly structured AI decision-making approach that formally expands the range of individuals consulted or brought into digital steering committees will help avoid significant delays to planning processes.”

Historically, AI has been within the purview of the IT business unit. But GenAI — with its democratization possibilities — fires up everyone to reimagine what a workday could look like with each employee having access to important insights, such as production dashboards that provide a real-time view of personal metrics or insights into customer service or insights that solve gaps and duplications in standard operating procedures.

If you aren’t an AI Influencer, and want to become one, you can start your journey by peeking into the Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) world. The MIT Technology Review Insights on GenAI report, sponsored by databricks, is a thought-provoking, over-the-shoulder look. The report — which educates on how large language models (LLMs) work and how AI is used in large organizations such as Adobe and Shell — drives home the complexity of a GenAI implementation project. And understanding the big picture primes an AI Influencer to become a well-informed — and respected — change champion.

A few of my takeaways from the report are listed below. I wonder what your takeaways are?

  • LLMs represent the first time humans and computers can communicate with each other using human language. Math makes it possible…and underscores the mind-blowing complexity of a human’s communication capabilities.

  • Data lakehouses are fascinating solutions to the data problems faced by organizations.

  • Creating governance around the use of a GenAI tool is a pre-requisite to investing in said tool.

  • Change management is an important part of a GenAI implementation project.

Effective Continuous Improvement begins with clarity on workflows, procedures, and training plans.
